Santa Fun Run and Walk Spectacular - Haddo Country Park,
4 December 2011
The dusting of snow added to the festive atmosphere of this year’s charity Santa Fun Run held on Sunday 4th December in the beautiful grounds of Haddo Country Park. The event, run by the Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum, supported by The Running Shop, Aberdeen, aims to raise funds to help with the eradication of polio but also allows participants who choose to be sponsored to give half of the money they raise to PolioPlus and half to the charity of their choice.
This year’s event once again had participants of all ages, with younger children completing a 2km run, and adults and older children either running or walking 5km around the park grounds dressed in the Santa Suits provided by the organisers. The route was well signposted, and marshals were staged at various points to ensure everyone found their way safely back to Haddo Hall to enjoy the free mulled wine and mincemeat pies.
The winner of the Children’s 2km run, Declan Abel, managed to get round the route in an impressive 11.02 minutes, closely followed by Andrew Driver. There was only a miniscule gap between the first adult male runner James Kirk who completed the 5km in only 19.40 minutes and the second David Blane at 19.42. The first lady runner, Anita Hamilton, was 4th followed closely by Bob Allanach the first of the younger runners. The first 3 “father“ Christmas’s and first 3 “mother” Christmas’s were presented with Christmas trees as prizes. The Running Shop generously donated a number of other prizes so that no-one who returned to the Hall left without receiving a prize. Although some of the runners enjoyed the competitive element, many of the participants entered solely to enjoy the challenge for themselves, or just to enjoy the atmosphere and the lovely surroundings.
The amount raised for charity this year was just under £300.
The organisers, the Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum, would like to thank everyone for their support at this year’s event, in particular The Running Shop, the National Trust for Scotland, staff at Haddo Country Park, St. Andrews First Aid, and of course the participants whose efforts will help support the total eradication of polio.
Keep the first Sunday in December free for next year’s event.
